Matt Richards grew up around Tree Care Enterprises, learning the trade firsthand under the guidance of his father, John Richards — one of Illinois' most respected arborists. While he initially planned to enlist in the Army, a bout with Lyme disease in high school changed his path and ultimately led him back to arboriculture.
Matt went on to study at Mid-State Technical College, earning a degree in Arboriculture before joining Tree Care Enterprises full time in 2021. Since then, he has quickly established himself as both a skilled climber and a trusted advisor to clients. He consistently places among the top performers in internal climbing competitions and brings a deep enthusiasm for tree work to everything he does.
Today, Matt leads the company's Plant Health Care department, where he works closely with customers to diagnose issues, improve tree health, and preserve long-term landscape value. Known for his sharp eye and practical insight, Matt often notices details others miss — earning the trust of clients who value his thoughtful, science-based approach.
Beyond the Job
Matt is married and has a young son. Outside of work, he has a unique interest in reptiles and keeps pet snakes — though they stay well away from the job site.
