About Tree Care Enterprises
John Richards started Tree Care Enterprises in 1978 with a forestry degree and a one-person operation. Today, our crews care for trees and landscapes across Rockford and Lake Geneva. The work ranges from pruning an old oak to treating an ash tree or clearing a driveway after a storm.
Our Mission
A mature tree takes decades to grow. We look for ways to keep it: pruning a weak branch, treating a pest, or protecting roots before construction. If removal is needed, we explain why and plan the work around your property.
Our History
From one arborist to a full crew
John Richards started the company in 1978. Here is how the work grew.
1978
Our Beginning
John Richards founded Tree Care Enterprises after earning his Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Michigan Technological University. Starting as a one-man operation, John quickly expanded the company with the addition of Doug Edwards, now Vice President of Operations.
1988
Early Expansion
We expanded into landscape design and installation, adding services like patios, retaining walls, ponds, and landscape lighting.
1990
New Service Offerings
Entered the irrigation and maintenance industry through the acquisition of Forest Hills Grounds Management assets.
2000
Acquisitions
We acquired Forsgren Landscaping and brought its experienced crews into the company.
2007
Award Winning Work
We earned Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) Accreditation after a review of our safety, training, equipment, and business practices.
2008
Strength in Safety
We added Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP) training and formed an employee safety committee.
2015
Green Initiatives
Launched our “Reuse, Reduce, Recycle” initiative, transforming tree trimmings and brush into clean, high-quality mulch and topsoil for our landscaping projects.
