Tree Pruning in Rockford, IL and the Stateline Area

Proper pruning is one of the most valuable investments you can make in a tree — and one of the most commonly done wrong. Topping, over-thinning, flush cuts, and stub cuts all cause damage that shortens a tree's life, introduces decay, and creates structural problems that lead to expensive removals down the road. Tree Care Enterprises follows ANSI A300 pruning standards on every job. Our ISA Certified Arborists assess each tree individually and direct the work from start to finish.

We've been pruning trees in Rockford, Winnebago County, and throughout the Stateline region since 1978 — from young street trees in Machesney Park neighborhoods to 100-year-old oaks on estates in Lake Geneva.

Types of Tree Pruning We Perform

  • Crown Cleaning: Removal of dead, dying, diseased, and broken branches throughout the crown. This is the foundation of virtually every pruning job — it reduces risk, improves aesthetics, and removes entry points for insects and disease.
  • Crown Thinning: Selective removal of live branches to reduce wind resistance, improve light penetration, and reduce weight on long lateral limbs. Done correctly, thinning should be nearly invisible from a distance — it should look like a natural canopy, not a stripped one.
  • Crown Raising: Removing lower branches to provide clearance for pedestrians, vehicles, signage, or buildings. Standard for street trees and commercial properties.
  • Structural Pruning (Young Trees): The most cost-effective pruning you can do. Directing a young tree's structure in its first 10–15 years can eliminate the need for cabling, bracing, or even removal later. We're particularly focused on correcting co-dominant stems and narrow branch angles early.
  • Crown Reduction: Reducing the overall size of a tree using reduction cuts that maintain the tree's natural form. A legitimate alternative to topping when a tree has genuinely outgrown its space.
  • Vista Pruning: Opening specific sight lines for lake views, property views, or aesthetic framing — common on lakeshore properties in the Lake Geneva area.
  • Storm Preparation Pruning: Removing deadwood and reducing wind sail before storm season to lower the risk of storm damage. Especially relevant in Rockford, where severe summer thunderstorms and winter ice loading regularly cause limb failures.

Why It Matters How Pruning Is Done

The most important thing to understand about pruning is that bad pruning is often worse than no pruning. Topping — cutting large branches back to stubs — is the single most damaging thing commonly done to trees. It destroys structure, creates massive decay columns, produces weak water sprout regrowth, and typically shortens a tree's life by decades. Our arborists will never top a tree. If a customer requests it, we explain why it's harmful and offer alternatives.

Every pruning cut we make follows the branch collar — the biology of how trees seal over wounds. Proper cuts heal. Improper cuts rot.

Common questions

Before you book a tree job

How fast can you respond to a tree emergency?

Call 815-742-5689 any time for emergency tree work. We assess the urgency and tell you when a crew can reach you. Storm demand and safe access affect response time.

Are your arborists ISA Certified?

Yes. Our team includes 7 ISA Certified Arborists who assess tree health and plan the recommended work.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Tree Care Enterprises carries full general liability and workers' compensation insurance, holds TCIA Accreditation, and our arborists are ISA Certified. Certificate of insurance available on request.

Do you provide free estimates?

Yes. An ISA Certified Arborist visits your property and prepares a written, itemized estimate. The visit and estimate are free.

How much does tree removal cost?

Cost depends on the tree's size, location, condition, and access. Small ornamentals can start around a few hundred dollars; large hazardous removals near structures or power lines cost considerably more. We provide a free, itemized estimate before you approve the work.

Can you treat ash trees for Emerald Ash Borer?

Yes. We offer trunk injection and systemic EAB treatments for ash trees that still have viable canopy (typically less than 30–50% dieback). Early treatment is significantly less expensive than removing a large, dead ash later.

What areas do you serve?

We serve Winnebago, Boone, and parts of DeKalb counties in Illinois, plus Walworth and Rock counties in Wisconsin. Call to confirm service at your address.

Will my trees actually be saved, or do you just remove them?

We assess whether pruning, cabling, or treatment can help the tree. If it is dead or too hazardous to retain, we explain why removal is the recommended option.
